There
are
an
estimated
5.5
million
orphans
in
South
Africa
-
close
to
half
of
them
have
lost
their
parents
to
AIDS-related
diseases
and
there
are
many
more
children
living
with
sick
and
bedridden
caregivers.
About
250,000
children
are
believed
to
be
living
in
child-headed
households.
These
staggering
statistics
are
the
reason
why
there
is
a
growing
need
for
solutions
that
will
bring
about
stability
and
desired
growth in South Africa. Inspired by this challenge, Sayoni Foundation was founded.
Sayoni
Foundation
is
a
Durban
based
Non
Profit
Organization
(NPO)
established
out
of
the
dire
need
of
contribution
to
the
eradication
of
social
ills
that
seem
to
perpetually
ravage
South
Africa
post-apartheid
era.
South
Africa
is
plagued
with
a
plethora
of
social
ills
ranging
from
horrendous
crimes
to
perpetual
corruption,
decay
of
the
family
fiber
and
increase
number
of
orphans
growing
without
guidance
and
support needed to raise responsible citizens.
The
SAYONI
ORPHANS
FEEDING
SCHEME
INITIATIVE
(SAORFESCI)
forms
one
of
the core initiatives for poverty alleviation and eradication.
There are three fundamental aims of this project viz:
•
To
contribute
meaningfully
to
coordinated
efforts
of
poverty
alleviation
and
eradication in South Africa;
•
To
establish
a
comprehensive
program
that
eliminates
dependency
but
create
opportunities for self-sufficiency for all beneficiaries; and
•
To
coordinate
interfaith
initiatives
of
advancing
human
development
and
charity
initiatives.
CURRENT UNFUNDED FEEDING SCHEME
Sayoni
Foundation
has
taken
it
upon
its
shoulders,
with
limited
resources
to
ignite
the
spark
that
is
meant
to
change
many
lives
of
the
orphans.
The
foundation
is
currently
providing
food
parcels
comprising
of
fresh
vegetables
and
starch
to
more
than
70
families
that
are
battling
to
make
ends
meet.
This
initiative
started
at
a
religious
institution
after
identifying
the
plight
of
poverty
with
which
many
orphans
faced
within
the
church.
Although
the
initiative
started
at
the
church
with
the
support
from
friends,
it
has
gone
beyond
the
borders
of
the
church
to
affect
communities
in
various areas around the eThekwini Municipality.
MAKING A LASTING, SUSTAINABLE DIFFERENCE
It
is
our
informed
view
as
a
foundation
that
feeding
families
is
not
sufficient
as
it
creates
dependency.
We
desire
to
couple
our
feeding
program
with
skills
development
for
all
our
beneficiaries
for
self-sufficiency
and
interdependence.
This
is
part
of
the
project
plan
that
seeks
to
contribute
meaningfully
to
poverty
eradication,
not
only
through
feeding
schemes
but
through
multiskilling
for
purposes of employment creation and poverty eradication.
